Cyberpunk 2077 Achieves 'Mind-Blowing' User Rating on Steam After Years of Development
CD Projekt's highly anticipated cyberpunk RPG stumbled out of the gate, but it has undergone a remarkable transformation since then. Today marks a significant milestone in Cyberpunk 2077's journey to redemption as its Steam user rating evolves from "mostly positive" to "very positive," signifying that over 80% of its colossal 553,000 user ratings now lean towards enthusiastic approval.
The news was shared by CD Projekt Red's global community director, Marcin Momot, who expressed gratitude to fans for recognizing the immense effort poured into the game over the years since its release.
While some may argue that this achievement is not extraordinary, it's essential to acknowledge that despite its initial bumpy launch, Cyberpunk 2077 performed reasonably well on PC, particularly on high-end systems. Even during its roughest phase, the Steam score never plummeted below 70%, a solid "mostly positive" rating for most games. However, given the immense expectations surrounding Cyberpunk 2077, anything short of universal acclaim was considered shocking, especially considering the game's tumultuous state on consoles.
Nonetheless, CD Projekt persevered, gradually improving the game. The first significant sign of progress emerged in November 2021 when new user reviews catapulted the game into the "very positive" category, fueled by an influx of feedback from players who snagged it at a discounted price during the Steam Autumn Sale. While the overall rating remained "mostly positive," the influx of positive reviews gradually propelled the needle forward. The Edgerunners update, launched alongside the highly-praised Netflix series, further bolstered the game's reputation by addressing lingering issues, such as the absence of cosmetic armor slots.
Upon visiting the Steam page, you might notice that Cyberpunk 2077 is still listed as "mostly positive." This discrepancy arises from user review settings on Steam, allowing users to exclude "off-topic reviews" to combat review bombing. However, opting to include all reviews reveals the game's true positive trajectory. In fact, if we disregard the thousands of off-topic reviews in February and March 2022, which Valve determined as irrelevant, the game's rating soars above the 80% mark.
It is highly unlikely that Cyberpunk 2077 will reach Steam's highest rating of "Overwhelmingly Positive" (requiring 95% positive user reviews), unless the forthcoming Phantom Liberty expansion revolutionizes the gaming landscape—both within the game world and beyond. Nevertheless, the journey from its infamously disastrous launch to its current state is a remarkable testament to CD Projekt's commitment to redemption.
