How ChatGPT Helped Valve Engineer Revamp Deadlock's Matchmaking System

A new matchmaking system was recently introduced for Deadlock after testers raised concerns about the previous version.

Interestingly, AI played a key role in the development of this new system. Valve engineer Fletcher Dunn revealed how ChatGPT assisted the team in the process:

“I’m going to keep sharing my ‘wins’ with ChatGPT because it continues to blow my mind, and I think some skeptics don’t fully grasp how incredible this tool is. Just a few days ago, we switched the hero selection system in Deadlock to the Hungarian algorithm. I discovered it thanks to ChatGPT.”

The Hungarian algorithm, originally developed in 1955, is an optimization algorithm that solves the assignment problem in polynomial time.

Dunn explained that he posed a query to ChatGPT, describing his problem—specifically asking if there was a "bipartite matching algorithm" that could meet the requirements of his task.
